Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class consists of 24 gifted fifth graders. This group presents many challenges when implementing instruction, as they have a higher need for enriching and challenging materials. They are also highly motivated, capable of working independently, and even driving their own instruction. Although predominantly Hispanic, my students come from a wide range of different cultural backgrounds within that spectrum.
As a group, we value and support each other.
We lend an ear when someone needs to speak and we speak out when we have something to say. We are a group; we are a team; we are a family.
My Project
My class is looking to complete their technology resource center by acquiring three ASUS Chromebooks. We use our laptops during instructional time using Kidblog for our science work as well as during independent study using IReady Math, and Reflex Math. My goal is to eventually have a full class set of 25. The laptops will will be a welcome addition to the classroom, giving more students the opportunity to complete their classwork.
As it is, our classroom is virtually paperless.
Yet even with my students bringing their own technology from home, there are still some children who simply do not have a computer available to them. I want to make sure that all of my learners have access to a laptop. I also know that many of the computers brought from home are outdated or too slow. My goal is to get my students reliable, kid-friendly, and rugged computers that they will be able to use to complete my lessons. The ASUS Chromebooks fit this criteria perfectly: they are water resistant, rugged, and dependable—just right for my learners.
With these laptops my group will be able to work on their math skills and also utilize them during science activities on the blog and when conducting without having to worry about them being roughed up.
Giving more students access to technology will not only help to increase their scores through the use of the programs we use, but it will also maximize their learning potential.
