My classroom of 30 fourth grade students is in a school of high poverty and all of our students receive free lunch and breakfast here at school. Many of my children are homeless living in shelters or in their cars. I have children who have hard to handle behaviors due to the high stress in their lives. The background knowledge that most of the children have is lacking due to the fact that most of their parents speak another language, are unable to read in their home language or English, didn't graduate high school, and most of them are working more than one job leaving many of my kids home alone. My students are having a hard time understanding the differences between the various regions of Oregon. Due to the negative outside impact of the world on their lives, the parents and children have other things to focus on. Many children in the surrounding areas don't have to worry about the daily impacts that my students face. I try to expose them to various activities that they wouldn't be able to access normally. We are currently studying the different regions of Oregon.
My Project
My students need more opportunities to experiment and problem solve in more areas then just math. My students tend to give up when something doesn't work right the first time. These kits would give them a way to engage and stay focused enough to want to try new things and experiment. I want my students to be able to learn science first hand not me lecture to them. I would rather discuss what they figured out and teach them why it works.
These Kinex kits will allow my students to not only study the various renewable energy forms but it will also allow them to struggle and problem solve.
