My Project

I teach Capstone at an interdistrict magnet school in Bridgeport, CT. In this class, students plan and conduct independent, relevant research on a problem they have identified in our world.

This year, I have a few students who are interested in studying the use of plants and bacteria to remove heavy metals from soil.

The enthusiasm and excitement of my students for planning a project of this scale are refreshing. After researching the topic extensively, I have determined that my students need a muffle furnace to evaluate their results. A muffle furnace is used to burn away all organic material, leaving only elemental products behind. This would allow them to measure how effective plants, working in conjunction with special strains of bacteria, are in removing heavy metals from soil. This furnace would also be used for future projects, as many biological projects require muffle furnaces to evaluate the mineral content of samples.
