Because of your donation, we've been able to introduce new texts that go beyond simply enjoying a good story—they help students build essential reading skills such as identifying themes, making inferences, analyzing character development, and strengthening comprehension through discussion and reflection. These books also provide opportunities to explore diverse perspectives and richer vocabulary, allowing students to deepen both their critical thinking and their empathy as readers.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is an active and engaging experience. Students read independently, in small groups, and as a whole class, often pausing to share ideas, ask questions, and make connections to their own lives. You would see students annotating passages, talking excitedly with partners about plot twists, and confidently expressing their interpretations during discussions. The new books have added a fresh energy to our routines, making reading time something students truly look forward to each day.\r\n\r\nSeveral students in particular have formed special connections with these new texts. Some who were previously hesitant readers are now eagerly picking up books and asking for more time to read, while others are diving deeper into complex topics and leading thoughtful conversations with their peers. It has been incredibly rewarding to watch their confidence and enthusiasm grow. Your support has not only put new books in their hands, but has helped nurture a love of reading that will stay with them far beyond our classroom—thank you for making that possible.","fullyFundedDate":1758813831443,"projectUrl":"project/expanding-our-9th-grade-library/9516826/","projectTitle":"Expanding Our 9th Grade Library","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Murphy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3681877"},{"teacherId":3681877,"projectId":9246853,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support in providing copies of Parable of the Sower for our Afrofuturism unit. This powerful text has allowed us to introduce students to complex skills that go beyond basic comprehension, including analyzing speculative fiction, examining social and environmental themes, and understanding how authors use futuristic settings to comment on present-day issues. Students are learning to track character development, evaluate author's purpose, and engage with essential questions about resilience, community, and identity—skills that deepen both their critical thinking and their awareness of the world around them.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is an interactive and reflective process. Students engage with the novel through independent reading, guided discussions, and collaborative analysis. Reading time is filled with curiosity and meaningful dialogue, as students connect the novel's themes to current events and their own experiences, making the learning both relevant and engaging.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have especially connected with Parable of the Sower in meaningful ways. Some who were previously quiet during discussions are now eager to share their interpretations, particularly around the novel's themes of survival and hope. I explained that I only asked for the donations-you, the donors, made it happen!\r\n\r\nI also shared the snacks with my Nutrition class students. In that class, I let them choose a snack, and then they had to evaluate the snack with regard to calories, fat, trans fat, protein, and fiber. This was a really great teaching opportunity.
