The issue is that the other classrooms in the building aren't so well equipped, and I'm requesting a single rolling whiteboard so that I can bring it to any other classroom I'm assigned to. Your generosity is giving our high school students an opportunity to experience science as something they can design, build, test, and improve—not simply read about in a textbook. Because of your contribution, students will be able to transform their ideas and sketches into working artificial incubators while developing skills that extend far beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nDuring this project, students will work in teams to construct incubators using coolers, fans, lights, thermostats, insulation, wiring, humidity chambers, and clear viewing panels. They will investigate how energy moves through a system, how insulation reduces heat loss, and how circulation affects temperature stability. Students will also learn how humidity, ventilation, and environmental conditions influence embryonic growth and cellular development.\r\n\r\nYour support will provide the thermometers, wiring components, insulation, view panels, and other materials that make this hands-on work possible. These supplies may appear simple, but in the hands of curious students, they become the foundation for genuine scientific investigation. A thermometer becomes a tool for collecting evidence. A fan creates an opportunity to study convection. A thermostat introduces feedback and automatic environmental control. A sheet of insulation allows students to test efficiency and improve their design.\r\n\r\nThe students will not receive a set of instructions that guarantees a perfect result. Instead, they will encounter the same process used by scientists and engineers: asking questions, conducting research, developing models, building prototypes, analyzing data, identifying problems, and revising their work. When temperatures fluctuate or humidity falls outside the desired range, students will need to determine why and develop a solution. These challenges teach persistence, collaboration, careful observation, and responsible decision-making.\r\n\r\nThe incubator builds also connect several areas of our science curriculum. Students will apply concepts from physics and engineering while studying embryology, genetics, artificial selection, reproduction, and cellular differentiation. This interdisciplinary approach helps students recognize that scientific fields do not exist in isolation. In that class, I let them choose a snack, and then they had to evaluate the snack with regard to calories, fat, trans fat, protein, and fiber. This was a really great teaching opportunity. I teach them about label ingredients and how to evaluate food products, so they were able to use their newly-acquired skills while enjoying their snacks.\r\n\r\nI still have a great stash of snacks that will last throughout the semester.
