Remembering History With Night

My students need 80 copies of "Night" in order to increase their reading level and to be more effective communicators.

My Students

When students are behind in their reading level, there is no time to waste. In some schools, there are not enough copies of books to go around, and teachers often end up making copies of entire books on photocopiers.

My students are all 10th graders, but most read below a 7th grade level.

Most students come from neighborhoods where reading and literacy may not always be lauded, and as a result are suffering from the effects of neglect from their school system. With a small push, many of them could be at reading level, however.

My Project

With 80 copies of the book, "Night," students can each have their own copy of a book that is at a reading level they can comprehend, yet high-interest enough to keep them reading even after the bell. The book is great for teaching historical context, exposing students to new cultures, and teaching rhetorical strategies.

It goes without saying that it's difficult to teach English without books.

A small donation to my project will help to ensure that all students have the opportunity to read and grow in their high school English class.
