My students are inner city, low income children who are in the 2nd grade of the Providence Public Schools. Many speak Spanish at home.
I teach at a Title I school in Rhode Island where everyone receives free breakfast and 90 percent of the students receive free/reduced price lunch.
They are unable to get to a local library on a regular basis. My classroom library provides them the only opportunity that they have to get books. My students are taking two books home every week night, and three on the weekends.
My Project
My students need a comfortable place to gather together. This place will host read-a-louds, group discussions, shared conversations and a host of other activities. Right now we have a multitude of individual rugs that are old, threadbare and small.
With one rug we can learn and share together.
This rug will make whole group instruction much more comfortable. Students will easily find their assigned spot for smooth transitions, which will cut down on lost instructional time.
Coming together in a relaxed environment fosters shared ideas, while enhancing a group's energy. This will also help my students focus and intensify their learning atmosphere.
