This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What works wonders to motivate reluctant learners? A new exciting story every week! My kids loved Weekly Reader and Time for Kids last year, but our subscription ran out.

My students have a wide variety of abilities and their reading levels range from kindergarten to third grade.

Our school has 90% or more families receiving free lunch, 90% or more come from a minority background, and we are striving to have 90% or more of our students meet or exceed on state standards. We are close, but it is difficult to close the gap when budgets are being cut, and the resources are not there for students with special needs.

My Project

If we get the Weekly Reader and Time for Kids magazines, my students will be motivated to read again. They always complain about carrying around books that look too babyish, but a magazine is another story. They are excited to show their friends the eye-catching pictures and practice reading the stories at home with their siblings. These magazines have improved my students' fluency and comprehension and I can't wait to use them again.
