Relevant Role Models: Reading Always Running

My students need a class set of the memoir Always Running: La Vida Loca.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you read a book that you simply could not put down? Do you remember what it feels like to have the ideas in a book burrow into your mind until you can't stop thinking about them? My students need to feel that and "Always Running" will undoubtedly be the book to do it.

My students are exuberant, opinionated, and full of potential.

They may not speak or write in proper English but ideas flourish within them. Unfortunately, they live in an area of Dallas where their perspective is limited to the few streets around them. Labeled "hood rats" by many of the surrounding community, my students have experienced things beyond imagining but have not yet tasted the vastness of the world. They are eager to know more, to see more, to be more but they need guidance along the way.

My Project

I have requested a rather provocative book purposefully. "Always Running" is the heartbreaking memoir of Luis Rodriguez who, as a young man, was heavily involved in the brutal gang life of East L.A. Since escaping that lifestyle, Rodriguez has become an award-winning poet and activist. His book was written in an attempt to tell his story and to motivate future generations to avoid the same mistakes. Rodriguez does not sugarcoat his experience. At times his honesty brings such vividness to unspeakable things in his past that readers cannot help but sit open-mouthed. But that is exactly the type of text my students need. They need to be gripped, captivated, and engrossed. And, without a doubt, "Always Running" will do that. But beyond it's riveting content, "Always Running" also speaks to the value of education as a means to escape the cycle of poverty and gang life. Rodriguez understands firsthand the hardship - and even allure - of gang life and challenges readers to see another way.

Having a class set of this book will provide my students with an enthralling story that they can literally get their hands on and enjoy themselves.

We will use this book in class for individual and class reading, for group discussions, and for personal writing. Additionally, "Always Running" will expose my students to new genres (i.e. nonfiction and memoir) and allow them to connect with a text from early on in the school year.
