Most students come to school with the impression that reading and writing are inherently boring subjects. By the time they leave my classroom, it is my hope that they have not only made significant growth as readers and writers, but have discovered the magic of reading and writing. I do my best to bring reading alive through reader's theater and make it social by discussing the books we read. We even take the time to write letters to authors we really enjoy and hope to receive a reply. The resource I am requesting will help make this reading and writing journey easier and more fun for my students. I am requesting 30 subscriptions to the Scholastic magazine Storyworks. This resource will benefit my students greatly as it is a magazine published for students and features student work as well. This subscription is so important because of all of the different reading and writing skills that Storyworks reinforces - fluency, proofreading, comprehension, word knowledge, and writing. The magazine features articles that my students will find interactive, engaging, and fun including plays to perform, interviews with students and authors, word games, and writing activities. I believe that this resource will motivate my students to achieve greater gains than they have ever made. After all, students learn most when learning can be fun. I am a 6th grade teacher in a self-contained classroom of approximately 30 students. I am transitioning this school year with the students I taught in 5th grade. I am so proud to be thier teacher again as the acheivements they made last year were astounding. Some of my students saw IMPROVEMENTS in their reading scores as high as 50%. In other words, because of their hard work and my persistence in providing them will all of ther resources they needed, some of my students who were reading at the 30th percentile in October were reading at the 80th percentile by May. This is a significant achievement for students in our school. I have taught at this school for the past 3 years and we have consistently scored at the 25th- 35th percentile in state tests. Overall, student achievement and behavior is in a terrible state - but not in my classroom. I believe in my students and I expect the best. I have found that no matter the circumstances, children will give you what you expect of them- good or bad. I am asking you to provide my students with 30 subscriptions of Storyworks magazine. By providing this resource, my students will have the oppportunity read material that is interesting and relevant to them. The textbooks at our school are irrelevant, outdated, and in poor condition. This is why it is so important to my students to have quality, motivating, and engaging material to read. Please provide our classroom with 30 subscriptions to Storyworks magazine and give us the opportunity to experience literacy the way it was meant to be enjoyed! Thank you.
