Relating To Diversity Through Novels

Help me give my students access to the novels that deal with real world issues and feature characters who are as diverse as them. Additionally, help me provide 2 arm chairs so my students have a comfortable environment to learn.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from unique and diverse backgrounds. They have the drive and passion to learn, but need resources that they can relate to. Not only do I teach ELA but also CLDE interventions. My focus is to bring novels in to my classroom that display diversity and real world problems. My students are all diverse and come from many different backgrounds. I feel that it is only fair that they get to see those who are similar to them in writing.

My classroom serves 6th and 8th grade ELL students and mainstream students.

They are each diverse and creative in their own way. Each needs to experience the same diversity they see in the classroom in their curriculum. Funding in District 2 is limited. Therefore, I am unable to request books that are not on the curriculum map. My students deserve for their passion for diversity and real world events to be filled.

My Project

The novel The Hate You Give, will help my students learn about real world issues all while relating to the the characters within the novel. Many novels featured in our library are limited when it comes to diversity in ethnicity and background.

By purchasing this novel for my students, they will be able to have a reading experience they have never had before; one that is both diverse and relatable.

It will help feed their passion and ignite their love for reading. The chairs will provide my students with an opportunity to read and learn in a space that is flexible to their needs. Desks do not work for all students.
