Help me give my students relatable classics and soon-to-be classics that they will want to read cover to cover.

My Students
Teen middle schoolers are at a critical time in their lives. Many of the decisions that they make, both good and bad, may have a ripple effect for many years to come. This is the main demographic of my students. They are 8th grade English Language Art students who are diverse, witty, technologically savvy, easily distracted and amused, creative, and "undercover" scholars.
These students come motivated to learn, to think critically, and to engage in dialogue that promotes understanding and collaboration.
However, one huge distraction to manifesting all these great qualities is supposed to be zipped up in their backpacks or left in their lockers.
My scholars can handle the rigor of the culturally relevant curriculum when the environment promotes the individuality of ideas, and the safe landing to explore where such thoughts will lead. They are ready to focus on the task at hand, but there's an elephant in the room...
My Project
The books that I want to have my scholars read will capture their interest first and then their imaginations as they can see themselves in the experiences of the characters who look like them, like Josh Bell a.k.a. Filthy McNasty in the Crossover and Stella in Stella by Starlight. Characters that think like they do and ponder their day to day experiences like they do in hopes of finding out who they are. Isn't that the question that we are all still pondering to some degree? How awesome to find some clues at a younger age about the mysteries of success in life and times in which they live within the setting of a book!
