My Project

Our 10th grade English students spend their semester with us preparing for their state test at the end of the course. Because students must pass this test to graduate, we typically spend so much time on test prep; that often leaves us feeling like we’ve lost sight of what truly makes English class interesting and impactful—the literature and its important real-world connections!

Through the Jason Reynolds novel “Long Way Down,” a novel written in verse, our students will cover our English 2 literature and writing standards, prepare for their state test, become less intimidated by the novel's approachable poetry, and most importantly, actually ENJOY reading a book!!

We'll use this book to talk about life through literature—the good, the bad, and the ugly—because the best literature mirrors real life. One of the biggest goals we have for our classrooms is to make our class relevant to our students beyond their high school career—a goal we’ve felt has taken a backseat in recent years. Through this book, we'll talk about current events, students’ own personal experiences, and help students develop a relationship with reading that will extend beyond the walls of our classrooms and beyond the halls of our school.

Reading this book will open our students’ eyes to the everyday struggles of teenagers just like them. We always want our students to be exposed to authors and characters that both reflect their experiences and diversify their perspectives because diversity and inclusion in literature are vital, and adding this text will further our goal of utilizing diverse texts!

We’re thrilled to add this book as a whole class novel for all 10th grade students next year! Please help us share this important, relevant text with our students by providing the 10th grade teachers with class sets of these books!
