Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am so grateful to be the librarian at a school in which reading is prioritized by all teachers. I love working with teachers and helping them develop lesson plans that are engaging for students.

This school year, our 5th-grade social studies teachers would like to make history come alive for our students.

They are looking for historical fiction novels with relatable characters that students can connect with and learn about history.

Our teachers are planning to read the book aloud a chapter at a time and discuss the book with the class. There are so many benefits to reading aloud to students and discussing the plot as well as character development. Our social studies know that book discussions can enhance vocabulary, encourage critical thinking skills, and build reading comprehension. Reading aloud has the added benefit of creating a sense of community within the classroom.

We are asking for a set of "I Survived" books by Laura Tarshis. This book will discuss a time in history with a relatable main character being the same age as the kids are today--a 10-12-year-old. The book highlights not only the history of the time but the character's worries, struggles, and relationships with their family and community. This makes the kids think to themselves, "Wow! Could I survive in this time period?" History has come ALIVE!
