This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach general music in a school where all of the students receive free breakfast and free lunch. Most of my students come from a low-income, high-poverty community thus many creative outlets these students need are unavailable. As such, I strive to provide a safe, welcoming, learning environment in my music class. I want to give my students opportunities to explore, learn, create, and grow through music.

The smiles I see when my students are having fun making music is priceless.

Students at our school believe that music prepares the brain for achievement, fosters superior working memory and cultivates better thinking skills. We believe that by exposing our students to a successful music and arts program, they become well rounded and have a higher chance for success in the regular classroom.

My Project

This project includes replacement parts for several of the supplies that we use in class everyday. A majority of the project seeks to rejuvenate our Orff instruments which are over twenty years old and have broken or missing pegs and tubing. Both of these items are easily replaced and will help the instrument last for several more years. The other items are dancing scarves. Ours are most likely older than the Orff instruments and have clearly been well loved. They are falling apart, full of holes and ready to be retired.

My students excel when learning with hands-on props or instruments.

Given the state and age of our supplies it is hard for them to participate to the fullest as many of the classes are spent taking turns sharing supplies. They aren't used to receiving new supplies and are always amazed and incredibly grateful when newer items are donated to the classroom.
