My Project

My students are extremely bright with aspirations of going on to major universities. While they are academically competitive and strive for the highest grade point averages possible, the classes comprise students whose socioeconomic backgrounds make it difficult to afford ancillary materials for class. Since this is an upper level senior class, we do not receive priority within the school's limited budget for resources. Instead, very limited funding is reserved for courses with tests that factor into our school's accountability model. As a result, the resources in my classroom are ones I purchase or are donated.

Also, students who are academically motivated but cannot afford course materials often do not take the course or any upper level courses, and they struggle to maintain a competitive edge when applying for college since their class ranking drops due to course selection.

The text, which will be used for literature circles among teachers, focuses on the psychological impact of childhood trauma as well as the process a character goes through to move forward and care for her own mental health. Light-hearted, humorous moments juxtaposed with serious subject matter is relevant to the lives of students who have lived through the current pandemic. The novel will pique students' interests, helping them engage with literature and relate to the perfectly imperfect character.
