Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an urban public school with over 900 students. The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures. There are over 15 different languages spoken in the homes of our students including Spanish, Portuguese, Khmer, and Vietnamese. Over 60% of our students’ homes do not speak English as their primary language and 25% of our student population receives ESL services. Enhancing their literacy skills can be challenging yet rewarding.
Servicing our middle school population that is classified as a Title 1 school and nearly 75% of our students receive free/reduced lunch is an enormous but gratifying to see them reach their personal gains.
Our school is part of the District Reference Group "H," which is the second lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in. Despite these economic barriers, our students strive for academic achievement. Our school community promotes our unique diversity and encourages students to reach their maximum learning potential. Students that I service bear the heavy task of making multi-grade level gains in literacy while balancing the demands of core classes.
My Project
Engaging middle school students in reading is no easy task. Books are consumable items that are always in need of keeping current to trends and topics. Students are always looking for books that meet their needs both by level and interest. Over the years, students get tired of the same old classroom library. Keeping a library that is both current and of high interest is not an easy task.
Reinforcing their reading rate with an updated collection of authors that appeal to this age group is key to making lifelong readers.
The added titles to the classroom collection will definitely help keep my students reading.
