Rehearsal Tracks for Pandemic Music-Making

Help me give my students rehearsal tracks. Having access to a high-quality digital piano will allow me to create effective rehearsal tracks.

My Students

I teach many kids who have never participated in music before. I love to see their faces when they start to realize that they enjoy singing in choir. At West Jordan, students come from varied cultural and economic backgrounds. It is often the case that these students come to love music after their first encounter with it. My hope is that each of them will find some element of music that resonates with them and improves the quality of their lives.

COVID-19 has especially complicated learning in music classrooms, since so much of what we do requires being present in a room together.

I have been so impressed with their resilience and willingness to roll with the punches.

My Project

The pandemic has made learning in classes of all sorts difficult. Music classes have been hit harder than most, however. Because most of our learning requires rehearsal and working together as a group, it is difficult for students to have meaningful experiences during the pandemic. Rehearsal tracks are one of the ways that students can continue to have effective practice sessions at home on their own.

These rehearsal tracks ensure that students from all demographics have a way to rehearse their music and be prepared for concerts and community events.

Creation of these tracks can be difficult and time consuming. Currently, to create these tracks I have to travel to find access to an adequate instrument and sound recording setup. With this Digital Piano, I would be able to complete each stage of production at the school and save hours of time in travel and setup, allowing more time to produce the tracks themselves.

Music, and choir in particular, is an amazing way for students to feel connected to the people around them. Even when students must wear masks and practice social-distancing, singing beautiful music together creates a unique camaraderie between them. The pursuit of excellence in music refines character, heals the spirit, and is incredibly therapeutic. Students need that. Having meaningful ways to practice their music will be of immense benefit to my students.
