My Project
Do you have strategies and skills to calm yourself when you become dysregulated? If so, imagine being a child and not having those skills yet. What would you want others to do to help you? Students typically ask for time to cool off and get their minds off what upset them. The most common tools used in schools are fidgets. These are items that students will hold, squeeze, or manipulate to regulate their bodies. These tools are essential to having a calm classroom!
Students must have tools readily available to help them calm down when I'm not immediately available.
My students know that when they are becoming dysregulated, they can go to a place in the room. Students feel comfortable moving away from classmates, which may increase their frustration. While moving away from the classroom, students can interact with fidgets. Fidgets are very useful tools that allow students to focus. Oftentimes, students become distracted by the fidget, allowing their minds and bodies to relax. By having a fidget in their hand, they are learning to self-regulate. This is a very beneficial skill for students as they progress through life. As students are manipulating their fidgets, I can have conversations with them to encourage a safe transition to completing their assignments. These fidgets will help tremendously in my classroom, so please consider donating to help support my students and me!
