Help me give my students an inviting, calming corner with two Big Joe Bean Bags, and a new carpet, with social-emotional learning tools to help meet their needs in the classroom.

My Project

My students are already so special to me, and when they walk through my classroom door, I know many of them will bring big emotions, heavy worries, difficult experiences, and significant social-emotional needs with them each day. This upcoming school year will actually be my third year teaching this group of students.

Over the years, I have watched them grow academically, socially, and emotionally, and I know firsthand just how deeply they feel and how much many of them struggle with self-regulation.

As their teacher, I want my classroom to be more than just a place to learn academics — I want it to be a safe, supportive environment where students feel seen, valued, regulated, and ready to succeed.

This calming corner will give students the tools they need to recognize, manage, and work through emotions in healthy ways while staying connected to our classroom community. Instead of leaving the room when emotions become overwhelming, students will have a safe space where they can reset, refocus, and return to learning with dignity and confidence.

Each resource serves a purpose. Flexible seating and cozy elements will help students feel secure and comfortable. Sensory tools and fidgets will support self-regulation and help release stress in productive ways. Visual emotion charts, breathing exercises, and mindfulness activities will teach coping strategies students can use both inside and outside the classroom. Journals and reflection activities will encourage emotional expression, independence, and self-awareness.

This calming corner will help students stay engaged in learning, strengthen relationships, improve classroom behavior, and create a positive classroom culture where every child feels safe, supported, and capable of thriving.
