My district is located in a high tourist town which makes the population very transient in which most of them come from low income areas and receive either free or reduced rate lunch.
My students are 3-5 years old with special needs so it is more difficult for them to complete a task or activity compared to their peers.
They love learning but with the combination of these things, it makes it difficult for them to focus on any type of task. They are sweet kids that get super excited when they are successful but they need to be provided with the right tools so they can thrive.
My Project
Our team was recently granted access to a new classroom so that our early childhood special education students can have a safe space to meet their sensory needs and prepare themselves for the day of learning ahead. We are so grateful for this new space that our kids can call their own.
Our room is in need of additional sensory and play materials in order to meet the diverse needs of our students.
We service over 90 students in our early childhood special education program, and each of them requires a different type and level of sensory input. The trampoline provides joint compression, and a way for students to release excess energy. The doll house provides our students opportunities to engage in cooperative, dramatic play, and will foster language and problem solving skills. The light covers eliminate the harsh, florescent lighting and provide a calming environment for our students. The combination of all of these things will provide our students with a calming space to regulate their bodies so they can be ready for learning.
