Refurbishing Our Courtyard Habitat: Turtles in School

My students need a storage shed and Create-A-Water Garden Kit.

My Students

Have you ever gardened? Our courtyard is an outdoor classroom for my students. We have a pond, a family of turtles, a compost bin ,and numerous birdhouses. It is an opportunity for many of my students to get dirty and to learn about what it means to care for our ecosystem.

Many of the students have always lived in an apartment.

They have little knowledge of plants or how to take care of them. By working in our courtyard, they are able to learn about weeds, flowers, plants native to our area and of course our turtle family. We undertook the renovation of the pond which is still on going. This was a learning experience for all as we literally cleaned the pond by hauling out buckets of water, cleaning the liner and refilling it for the turtles as well as ultimately adding fish. We added aquatic plants then learned that the turtles used them as food so we went in search of"turtle proof" plants. The students were proud of the work they did and the knowledge they gained. Our courtyard will soon be certified as a National Wildlife Habitat, which means we still have work to do to keep our courtyard a place of pride and peace.

My Project

These resources will help me have a place to store my tools as well as other necessary items needed for gardening. At this time, I have to keep everything in my already crowded classroom. Having a place to store items necessary will enable me to get more of what I need borrowing less and giving everyone a chance to "get dirty." The students learn many things working outside, such as cooperation, responsibility, and I often find that a student may struggle in class but shines outside. This is an on going project and for the last three years we have been working in the courtyard, I have seen my students grow in ways that would not be possible inside.

Our courtyard is a wonderful place to learn.

We have lots of work that is never ending from planting, watering, trimming, and composting to maintain the pond. Our hope for this year is a rain barrel. The many things we have in our courtyard have been donated but with the uncertainty of the times, donations have fallen off considerably. This truly is a outdoor classroom with the benefits to the students priceless as well as the pride they take in the work they have done.
