Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
On the first day of school I asked each of my students to write about why they came to the United States.
"To have a better life and to be someone in the future." That was the response of an eleventh grade student from El Salvador, and her response echoed the responses of everyone else.
Every single one of my students is a newcomer to the United States. About 50% are immigrants and 50% are refugees. They come from all over the world with the same goal: to have a better life.
My students are from Syria, Rwanda, Uganda, Nepal, Puerto Rico, China, Burundi, Congo, Ecuador, The Dominican Republic, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Cameroon, Iraq, and Mexico. Although they arrive with limited English knowledge, they certainly arrive rich in curiosity, passion, and a love of learning. They are kind and brilliant and have an incredible wealth of knowledge from their home countries. I can assure you that this group of students will appreciate any amount of generosity you are able to contribute.
My Project
A new folder, fresh markers, a personal ring of notecards or their very own whiteboard eraser will give my students a sense of ownership in their learning that is contagious for the whole class.
My students feel empowered when they have new materials that help them stay organized and engaged in school.
By contributing to this project, you are giving a student that is brand new to The United States a fresh start and a vote of confidence as they embark on their new schooling endeavor. I have seen time and time again the excitement, joy, and gratitude my students express when given the simplest of school supplies. I'm looking forward to seeing that again this year.
