Refreshing Our Recess!

Help me give my students quality recess equipment including outdoor jump ropes, appropriate-sized tether balls, basketballs, foursquare balls, soccer balls, scooter boards, and marking paint to set up the play field.

My Students

Our class consists of over two dozen uniquely energetic, creative, motivated seven- and eight-year-old students, heading full STEAM ahead into second grade. Ours is a neighborhood school, serving the families of our city since 1953. Our class and the school has an amazing group of children from a fabulously diverse range of backgrounds and experiences. Unfortunately, high poverty is part of the experience for most of these young learners.

These wonderfully wiggly young learners deserve every advantage as we work together to improve achievement in reading, math, and science by focusing on the whole child - building confidence while fostering their creativity and curiosity, nourishing both bodies and minds.

Lifelong learners are created by lighting the spark of imagination that drives a passion to learn.

I teach my students through rich, integrated units that make connections between literature, science, math, social studies, and the arts. Students' physiological needs must first be met before we can begin the work of nourishing their minds: safety, hunger, and food security are primary needs.

My Project

Our students have been using a worn out, meager selection of old recess equipment for a long time, with most of the balls and equipment much older than the students themselves. With building budgets dwindling, there aren't any new purchases on the horizon.

Our students need appropriately-sized recess equipment, such as basketballs, soccer balls, tether balls, and four-square balls to make sure they have plenty of options for healthy, interactive team play at recess; jump ropes, including long ropes for double-dutch will improve rhythm as well as cardio-vascular health.

We will be able to use the marking paint to set up the playing field for team sports at recess, which will increase healthy social interactions between students. Scooter boards are a favorite activity at our school, but the ones used for PE are currently only used outdoors for special occasions; a dedicated recess set would add another engaging, healthy outdoor activity!

During the cold, rainy season, our "big toy" and swings are exposed- tether-ball, foursquare, and basketball are the best options for playing under a covered area. A variety of primary and intermediate-sized balls will ensure that every student has access to the appropriate size equipment for healthy outdoor play!
