My Project
Teenagers are ALWAYS hungry, but they are also often thirsty. If students' basic needs are not met, then they will struggle to maintain focus in the classroom. They exhibit mental stress and anxiety also. Giving students lots of passes to get water or snacks not only fills the halls with an overflow of kids, creating opportunities for mischief, but it also interrupts the class repeatedly, every day, every hour. We need a way to meet the students' needs with minimal interruption.
An in-class water station will allow students to quietly help themselves without needing to leave the room or interrupt class!
Any of the kids could be thirsty and want a drink at any time, and I try to help or have them run to the fountain really fast. Also, for the hungry, I have learned to hide snacks but have them available for those who really need them. After eating a snack, this increases the likelihood that they will want a drink. There's always someone.
I struggle to have drinks/food for kids because they require me to spend a lot of time and money to stock up, and the kids drain me dry in no time! A water station will help immensely. I can use students to help set it up and keep it clean, which teaches them responsibility and citizenship. The snacks will help those constantly hungry to spend their time on their work instead of complaining to their friends and asking to use a pass. The markers are for art projects and mental health drawings. As a Spanish teacher, most projects involve lots of colors, and my markers are fading and drying out. These are scented too, which inspires the kids to get to work with them!
