My Students

I am a full-time teacher, but for half of the day, I help students in my position as Behavior Coach. Students are sent to me when they get upset or are demonstrating a behavior that is interfering with their learning or the learning of others.

My role is to work with these students and to get them the support they need to be successful.

The goal is for them to be able to return to their classrooms as soon as possible. Our school has approximately 185 students, and the number of students I see varies. I see students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

My Project

In my classroom, I have tried to create a relaxing area that is set up in a different way than the traditional classroom. I currently have a rug that I brought from home, some small wooden chairs that were donated in memory of a former student, a relaxation fountain and four light filters. When a student is upset or is not working/participating in his/her classroom, the student often comes to me. I work with the student on calming strategies and my goal is to help the student get back to class. Often, before I can talk to him/her about what might be going on in his/her life, the student needs to feel relaxed and at ease. I sit on the rug and try to create a less formal environment. When the student feels comfortable, I have noticed that he/she is more likely to open up about what he/she might be upset by and/or going through, and then we can proceed.

The rug will be a nice spot for us to sit and talk, where the students hopefully feel comfortable and can relax.

The beanbag chair will offer a great alternative for them to sit and be comfortable. We have lights in our classroom that are very bright and the light filters will help create a soothing environment.
