My Project

I am in my sixth year as the STEM teacher at our school for all students from K-5th grade. Our school provides free meals to all of our students. These children in my classroom are at many different intellectual and ability levels ranging from gifted to special needs. Some of our students are classified as homeless, some have language challenges due to being ELL, and some children are in foster placement. We have many military families since our school is less than a mile from a military base.

We often discuss waste reduction, reusing materials, and recycling in our STEM classroom.

With our Earth Day lessons, students are learning ways they can incorporate these concepts in their own lives. Because I have so many students every week in my STEM room, any project takes a lot of materials. I always stress the importance of saving scraps for future projects instead of tossing their creations in the trash. I have spent many hours after school removing tape from craft sticks and cardboard, rescuing small pieces of straws from the floor, and unfolding index cards. I have saved lots of items from being put in the trash at home and bring them to school for use around the classroom and in lessons I develop.

Children love to cut and create new projects. I would love to have this Makedo Invent Construction Tooklit to allow them to not have to share the tools in their groups. This will also help make their time in class more productive. These safe tools will also be beneficial to the special education students who may need a little more help as they work alongside their friends.
