Redefining Class Pets

Help me give my students a robot class pet! Students will learn the CS vocabulary and engage by bringing their class pet into all interdisciplinary core subjects to breakdown stereotypes of who can be a computer scientist.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students have many different interests and needs, in the classes I work with, this is the always the case. Each student brings a unique perspective to the classroom environment and adds their own way of looking at the world. Students work to engage in the material taught as they relate it to their own lives and experiences.

The diverse classroom creates a safe place for all students to learn from one another and appreciate all cultures and perspectives.

A goal of our campus is student unity as they grow and thrive. The motto this year is "Be the I in KIND". Within the classroom, students are recognized for their differences and individual perspectives. Through the integration of computer science each student learns tools that change their perspective and connects them to the world. Students are the future of our community, and teaching them about computer science by connecting it to their lives makes my life, and theirs, rewarding.

My Project

In this project, students will be introduced to their new class pet, the Kibo robot. Students will be able to learn how to take care of their new class pet at the same time building skills for basic engineering, coding, and programming, as well as a range of cross-curricular connections to literacy, community, dance, science, and more. Students will not only be able to discover all the features of their class pet inside the classroom walls but take it home over the weekend to dive deeper into potential coding activities. Through workbooks and journals, students will practice their writing skills and sketching as they solve problems and imagine creations.

The impact of this new class pet will allow technology to become a playground as students learn the CS vocabulary and engage by bringing their class pet into all interdisciplinary core subjects.

This begins to break down the stereotypes about technology before they can take root in children. This will open the doors for many years to come for students to use these tools they learn such as growth mindset, perseverance, and computational thinking skills that allow students to develop their sequencing abilities as a foundational skill for literacy and mathematics.

The lessons that students will complete will be unplugged activities with no screen time such as memory games, creating puppets to sing and dance, and experimenting creatively to program Kibo to spark interest for students to become problem solvers.

Kibo allows all students to have the opportunity to learn and explore CS as they take care of their class pet and imagine what it can do. Instead of using the core subjects to be the backbone of the integration of CS, this approach allows teachers and students to introduce the class pet in a fun and creative way.
