Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
They warm my heart. These little and some not so little students of mine are the epitome of a challenge. They challenge me to teach better, work harder, and expose this gigantic world to them so that they may gain a better understanding of it. I teach in a Title I school, which means that there is a high percentage of children from low-income families. They come from all over the world; Bangladesh, India, Mexico, China, Honduras, etc. My classroom is a melting pot of different cultures. They are all eager to learn and are always ready to devour anything new.
My students are my extended family; always asking questions and in the process, we educate one another, the benefits goes both ways.
Most days they greet me with a smile, and they hardly ever complain, which always amazes me. I honestly could not ask for better students.
My Project
I've been teaching for almost 20 years and I have always had a meeting area in my classroom, a place where myself and my students gather to get a better understanding of what's being taught. Also, a comfortable place where students get lost in their reading and excel in their writing. Unfortunately, I had my rug half of those years. Although I had tried my best to keep it clean, it just had to go. Honestly, I was happy. The children deserve better. Here's the catch, I cannot afford better.
I now share my classroom with two other teachers, and seeing their younger students struggling to get comfortable really tugs at me.
I have more students than I have ever had, this means that there is minimal space. A rug for needed comfort and space, colorful stools, and a bean bag to sit on would make my classroom more inviting and cheerful. This would definitely put a smile on their faces.
I am also asking for a rug pad for safety so that the children do not slip, and for a rug cleaner to keep our learning environment hygienic.
