Recycle Our Leftovers with Composting

My students need (5) composting kits, (3) bags of compost starter to sustain the program, and (1) soil pH meter so that we can monitor it over time.

My Students

I'm not a fan of "convenience food" lunches such as corn dogs, chicken nuggets, hamburgers, hot dogs, and "pork ribletts." But truth be told, kids are picky eaters and it can be hard to satisfy their tastes in a nation where home cooking doesn't hold the same meaning anymore.

Even so, our kids waste a lot of food.

How much? More than we have the capacity to adequately measure. We're a new K-5 school in our first year of operation, and we serve the highest-need students in our community -- well over 95% qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our average student is 2.3 years behind in reading, and 2.1 years in math.

My Project

With your help, we can turn these challenges into a learning opportunity for our kids. I've seen significant student investment in our recycling program (also sponsored through the help of people such as yourselves), and I think we can push their love of recycling paper to the realm of food waste.

Our responsibility as educators and community members means that we need to prepare our children for a changing modern world, and that means going beyond literacy and math skills.

Students need to learn that the contemporary issues we face will also affect them: recycling, sustainability, and waste.
