I want to create a safe, engaging and educational environment where the students in my classroom want to come and learn. I teach children with special needs in grades K-5 on a Native American Indian Reservation. 100% of the student population receives free breakfast and lunch. They live in extreme poverty, often coming to school without their basic needs being met, such as wearing warm clothes, being fed, or getting a good night's rest. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My Project
I want my students to learn stories from their past. Native traditions are slowly disappearing, the younger generation do not know the stories of their past. The supplies from this project will aid in creating a fun way to learn. My students will interview their Elders to learn native stories. Then they will recreate the stories they learned using the puppets.
Each student will take turns being the camera person while their classmates use puppets to tell the Native American stories they learned.
The class will have a 'movie' day to watch the stories they created.
I'm excited for this project. It will help enhance so many learning skills such as writing, communication, digital/tech, as well as Native American history/traditions.
Thank you in advance for your interest and support for my students. They are very grateful for everything they get.
