This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Recorder Ninjas shouldn't have to share! With the Recorder Karate program my 3rd grade students are already wildly invested in achieving their "white belts," by passing playing tests. They will be so much more successful with their own recorder to practice with!
I am blessed to have hard working students, but I cannot deny that our school is high poverty and has a high percentage of English Language Learners.
It is infeasible to ask parents to provide "non-essentials," and so I only have one set of recorders available to me for three classes worth of students. As an experiment I sent the recorders home for the weekend with one class of students. When they returned over 60% of the class was able to pass their first playing test and achieve their "white belt" on the first try! The difference that at-home-practice made is astounding. I even had a 4th grade teacher tell me she caught some students playing "Hot Cross Buns" on their way home because they were so excited. After the winter break we will have no choice but to share recorders and eliminate all opportunity for out-of-school practice. My students have already shown the will to learn, please help to give them a way!
My Project
I am requesting a class set (30) of beautiful blue soprano recorders. I can only imagine how excited my students will be to see instruments that have not been hot glued together and are not covered in another person's teeth marks! These 3rd graders will have the opportunity to spend more time practicing as individuals and they will learn to increase their own responsibility in bringing their instrument to and from school. Additionally, I will have more time to plan for them because I won't have to spend so much time sanitizing the recorders we do have.
One recorder costs about 4 dollars.
For the price of one fancy coffee, one of my students can feel validated in the hard work he or she has already begun to show. Music class is a place where each and every student has the opportunity to be successful, no matter their birth language or income tax bracket. Please help me to show my students that their hard work matters!
