My Students

My students love music! They are super excited about playing their first instrument that they can call their own. I have been with most of them throughout their elementary years and have taught them the basics to begin this adventure.

Due to rampant problems in our poverty-stricken area, many of my students' refuge is at school, and their joy is in music!

I want to nourish that love to show them that they can play and create their own music in which to find solace and happiness.

Many students in my Title I school cannot afford the minimal amount for their recorder to learn how to play their first instrument. Their parents are in survival mode and can't afford basic living expenses, much less anything they may consider non-essential.

My Project

My students will be using the recorder to learn how to play melodic music independently. This will be their first time playing their own instrument and learning to read music fluently so that they are successful at this endeavor. Each student could have their own recorder to use in class and keep after the recorder unit.

My 4th grade students always look forward to this rite of passage and feel "grown up" learning how to play an instrument of their own.

It makes all the learning, up to this point, connect to a level of relevance that students appreciate. The ability to learn to play songs they like is very motivating. Many students don't like to sing because it is too vulnerable, but they thrive in music when allowed to play instruments!
