I am a kindergarten teacher at Lawton Alternative School in San Francisco and I teach many children with boundless and exuberant energy. Unfortunately, we share physical education (P.E.) and recess equipment with the rest of the school and we are unable to provide enough balls, hula hoops, or jump ropes to occupy and sustain the energy level of our 60 kindergarten students. That is to say, our kindergartners are separated from the rest of the school in a rectangular yard that is paved in brick, lined with benches and enclosed by metal fences. The yard is barren, empty of any type of play structure and lacks equipment. P.E. equipment is the only means these children have to expend their energy, develop their large motor skills, and enhance their physical activity. In other words, the kindergarten students at Lawton Alternative School need P.E. and recess equipment. As one of their teachers, I would like to request equipment that will enable both P.E. and recess to be more productive in the development of these students' large motor skills and to increase their physical activity overall.
