This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This is my first year teaching and I am starting in the middle of the school year! I am prepared for the challenge as I have been preparing for this day my whole life. My students have not had a permanent teacher all school year and are looking forward to the structure and comfort of being in their English classroom versus in overflow. For half of my students, this is their first experience of high school while the other half is approaching graduation.
I need as much support as possible to create a home environment and foster a continuing/renewed love of learning for my students.
In my class, we are quite interactive and engage in higher-level thinking in order to prepare for the "real world".
My Project
I recently transitioned from teaching Elementary to High School as a first time, English teacher! I inherited books the students cannot relate to or are outdated and do not capture the readers' interest.
Your donation will ignite interest in reading and learning among high school students.
Being in a very diverse school, it would be great for the students to be able to make connections with the characters and themes. We are currently conducting testing and the students had a choice when done with the assessment, to grab a book or to rest; the majority chose to rest. We emphasize how a good reader leads to a good writer and having recent YA titles will encourage the students to read and write!
