Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our elementary intervention program, which consists of six teachers, works with all students from kindergarten through the sixth grade. Students in our intervention program are curious learners who need extra support in English Language Arts, and we have the opportunity to design strategic instruction to support our students’ specific learning needs. The majority of the students that we work with are English Language Learners, so our support is critical in helping them develop the skills needed to progress to fluency in the English Language. Our school is a Title One elementary school, meaning many students in our school community come from low-income backgrounds and may lack access to different educational opportunities outside of school. Therefore, it is much more important for us to be able to provide meaningful learning opportunities and support for our students at our school.
My Project
To bolster our intervention program to ensure the success of each student that we work with, we are asking for a variety of supplies that will allow us to continue to develop meaningful and engaging instruction. At the core of our instruction is English Language Arts that focuses specifically on supporting struggling and ELL students. For this reason, we strive to cultivate a literacy-rich environment where students are encouraged to engage in reading materials and develop as independent readers. To support this goal, we are asking for Scholastic Nonfiction Readers to enhance our library and engage students in our guided reading program. In addition, we are asking for an area rug and comfortable student seating that will encourage their development as readers and foster their love for reading.
To support our strategic instruction, we are asking for 2 magnetic easel whiteboards to use in our lessons to visually display key content such as new vocabulary terms, phonics instruction, and thinking maps which will be critical in supporting our students.
Also in support of our instruction, we are asking for student whiteboards to provide each student with tools that will allow them to participate in meaningful ways with the content and help them develop autonomy and ownership of their learning.
Lastly, we are asking for different teacher supplies that will allow us to continue to cultivate a strategic and supportive learning environment for our students. We are in need of teacher chairs that allow us mobility while delivering instruction and moving to work with different students in our groups.
