My students need a supportive and appealing area with flexible seating and rug, along with technology devices such as a charging station and sound proof headsets for help with homework, projects, reading, or just a little TLC!
I teach a variety of students of different intellectual capacities: general education students, special education students, students with dyslexia, students with dysgraphia, and ESL students.
Hurricane Harvey irreparably damaged my middle school.
Not only was my classroom lost to the destructive 62 inches of torrential rains, but my children’s families, whose homes make up our community, lost everything as well. These students’ lives have been shattered by the effects of Hurricane Harvey, not only losing their school, but losing their homes and all their personal possessions. The neighborhoods looked like war zones, with mounds of debris piled as high as the rooftops.
After the Pine Island bayou spilled its guts into the school, then the sewer regurgitated what it did, nothing was salvageable from our school. Most of the children are still displaced in homes with relatives, camping trailers, or if they are extremely lucky, FEMA trailers.
We all have been finally reunited in a portable campus after being displaced in three different schools. It has finally sunk in just what I did lose! Everything! So for now it baby steps to ensure I do the very best job I can to meet every child’s individual needs!
My Project
My project is to create a warm, comfortable, and inviting area in my room that I believe my children need and long for, something different from the white paneled walls in my classroom, as well as, the white paneled walls of the FEMA trailer, or the shell of their homes constructed only of studs.
A majority of my children don’t have a warm and inviting area at home where they can work on projects, unfinished homework, get extra help on their lessons, or just a place that they feel at comfortable to grab a book or technology device and just read, and it is my desire to create an atmosphere like this in my classroom with flexible seating, a rug, and technology devices such as a charging station and sound proof headsets.
By adding a splash of color, extra seating, and few technology extras, I can create an engaging atmosphere inside my classroom for my children that they need and deserve!
