My Students

My soccer players have been incredibly resilient this past year during the pandemic. After a year of pandemic-disrupted soccer, my hope is to have a safe return to the soccer field this year while pushing players to achieve great growth and develop their skills.

My students attend a Title I school on the south side of Oklahoma City where 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch.

Our school has a student population that is 76% Hispanic, 12% White, 8% Black, and 4% Native American. Although the majority of students face numerous barriers during their educational career, including language barriers and the effects of inter-generational poverty, they come to school and try their best.

Playing soccer has had hugely positive effects on my players due to the combination of beneficial physical and emotional effects that come with exercising outdoors in a team setting. As we continue to build our team up, I want to support my players to grow their skills to their full potential. We have significant interest in the team this year, and I hope that with these materials, we can target training to their varied needs.

My Project

My girl soccer players come with a wide gamut of skills from brand new to multiple years of school and informal extracurricular experience. Last season, amidst a lot of pandemic restrictions and concerns, we struggled with numbers and attendance. However, this year many dozens of girls have expressed interest, and I am looking to build a true talent pipeline with a solid JV squad and experienced varsity squad.

These materials will enable coaches and players to differentiate training sessions to target basic ball skills for beginners and develop precision and accuracy for more advanced players.

Items like the rebounder can be really helpful for players of any skill level, but I am envisioning varied uses, including setting up rotating stations for players to target different skills. At one station, players can practice ball handling and reacting to the ball with the rebounder. At another station, players can use the 3-in-1 trainer to practice their accuracy when shooting or even passing. At another station, students can work in pairs to improve their passing accuracy using the passing gates. Additionally, students sometimes forget their shin guards and have to share with those sitting on the bench. Having an extra pair in the game bag will ensure that every player can play without worrying about not having the proper equipment. Finally, the soccer season can be really demanding of players' bodies. KT tape will help players with tendencies to get injuries to stay safer and be able to play more.
