My biology students work hard all year to dive into the study of living things. Whether my students are grappling with the molecular structure of DNA or observing the behavior of pill bugs, their eyes are being opened to the multitudes of life. Through a blend of hands-on activities, collaborative group projects, and more traditional lectures, my students explore biological systems from the smallest organelle to the greatest migration of land mammals on Earth. My students attend a Title I school on the South side of Oklahoma City, where every student receives free breakfast and lunch. Our school has a student population that is 76% Hispanic, 12% White, 8% Black, and 4% Native American. Although the majority of students face numerous barriers during their educational career, including language barriers and the effects of intergenerational poverty, they come to school and try their best.
