My students need leveled non-fiction books to increase their reading levels and their comprehension ability. My school does not have a lot of these materials.
I teach a diverse group of learners. Over 50 percent of my students speak English as a Second Language. Many of my students need exposure to non-fiction literature and vocabulary to enable them to comprehend grade level literature.
My school consists primarily of African-American and Hispanic learners.
The majority of my students have not had any preschool experiences. As a result, many arrive in Kindergarten years behind their peers. They are loving, kind, and caring. My students have an intense desire to learn. They need to be exposed to grade level appropriate materials in order to make the significant growth required of them.
My Project
Once my students receive the leveled books, they will be able to read them at school and at home. Comprehension questions will be written to aid parents with book discussions at home. Students will also be able to create projects, participate in book clubs, and gain the exposure and vocabulary these leveled books will provide.
My students will fall in love with reading.
They will be exposed to science and social studies topics in language that is appropriate for them. The books will expand their horizons. My students will want to place them in their independent reading bags and read them during independent reading time. These books will be able to be checked out and taken home for the students to receive more practice with grade level appropriate literature.
