Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I serve a diverse group of second graders that live in a low-income community where making ends meet is a daily struggle.
Over 70 percent of the students at our Title I school receive free lunches.
We serve students from all around the world. In our class alone, students are first or second generation from Guatemala, Figi, the Philippines, Mexico, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. We live in a central location for accessibility to countless encounters with nature, technology, art, and other enriching worldly aspects that build a well-rounded student. Unfortunately, our families often do not have the finances or resources to expose their children to the lush experiences available in central California.
My Project
New books in our classroom would open a world of learning for my diverse group of learners. Because students in my classroom are from all around the world, first, second-generation, as well as native English speakers, students need a wide range of literacy materials. The leveled library would allow students of varying abilities to have independent choice in their book titles, with an increased awareness of his or her appropriate reading level and zone of proximal development. I want to encourage students to keep reading and to have self awareness as to their own reading levels, so having books organized by levels and readily available for scholars to read is highly beneficial to increasing their reading abilities. With more books available in our classroom, students will be able to increase their reading levels, interest, and engagement.
Flexible seating and chair socks help to minimize distractions for students who have ADD or ADHD during reading instruction.
The English Language Development kits will be used during reading for small group instruction.
