My students have expressed the desire to have more active movement in our classroom. Research shows us that students should have the opportunity to move around every twenty minutes. In order to support this in my classroom and to meet the needs expressed by my students, we have come up with several methods that will not only promote physical activity but will also promote focus in the classroom during instruction in an unobtrusive manner. In discussing with them their desires, we have compiled several items that will help them to be focused in the class as well as being physically active and focused on health simultaneously. The items I am requesting include a class set of sitting walkers, classroom mini-refrigerator to store water, beanbag chairs to promote posture, and a stand alone exercise peddler. The sitting walkers will allow my students with ADHD to have a method of being active while still assisting in enhancing their focus. Students slip these under their desks and they are small enough to be unobtrusive to their partners. As a substitute for an exercise bike, I am requesting a stand alone exercise peddler which I will place in the back of the class and students will have the autonomy to use it while working if they feel their attention slipping away and want to release energy. To promote hydration, I am requesting a miniature refrigerator for the classroom in order to store water for our students to drink throughout the day. Additionally, students have requested beanbag chairs as an alternative to sitting in their normal chairs. Beanbag chairs promote better posture, and provide students with the opportunity to move around the room while increasing their focus (clorox wipes will be used to promote hygiene in the upkeep).
