Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This Writing curriculum has the child at the center of the lessons. Students are thought of as real writers and it pushes them to not only learn the standards but also to have voice in their writing, add craft to their books, and enjoy creating 'books.

This Writing is designed to help second graders take all of the writing skills in their possession to the next level, and to prepare them with the skills they’ll need to be successful in third grade and beyond.

Unfortunately writing is often taught in a way that makes writing a chore or feel like a huge burden. In these units students are supported with examples from published books, visuals, sentence frames, and tools to help them feel like real writers, have fun, and therefore be more willing to do the big work. They have writer's notebooks filled with charts and other tools to help them. And of course they write with pens just as real authors do.

My students have things to say. They have voice and a desire to try craft moves that real writers use in their books. Every year the majority of my students come in and really do not like writing. By the end of the year, they ask for more writing time! I consider that success! And the skills they learn in these second grade lesson will carry with them into the upper grades.
