This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work with students in the upper grades, this year mostly 6th and 7th grade students. Academically, they are close to reading on level but are not quite there. They really need an extra push to move forward in their academic pursuits. Often times they work really hard but do not see the results that they hoping for. This can be very discouraging and many times can cause them to shut down. However, when they are involved in reading about real world topics they stay engaged and keep putting forth their best effort.
My Project
I am excited to offer my students access to materials that are high interest with a readability that they can handle. The pages of the Scholastic Scope, magazines are colorful and engaging. This will help motivate my students to learn the same skills and strategies that their other classmates are learning.
A subscription to a classroom magazine gives my students access to real world events and timely news stories.
They are high interest, with low readability, which means they can work at their ability level. Scope is a magazine with various articles centered around a common theme. The skills and strategies included in these materials mirrors the work in their regular classes.
