My students attend a PK-8th grade charter school. My kindergarten class is small in numbers providing for more one on one instruction. A majority (if not all) of the students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and households where English is not the primary language. Most of my students also stay for the after school program because their parents work. This means that 10 hours of their day is spent at school.
The students are rambunctious and love to explore and move.
Times at school learning and exploring may be the only time they gain exposure to certain topics. I believe that the topics students learn and experiences they have in kindergarten are vital to build and encourage their love of learning.
My Project
Children need exploration and first hand experiences to make real life connections to what they are learning. A lot of our students may not have the funds to experience the zoo or the Real Wild Classroom outside of school. During the end of the year, we will be learning about different kinds of animals, their life cycles, and their habitats. Through the Real Wild Classroom, students will not only learn more about the animals they saw in class but they will also be able to see them firsthand to make observations. Students will also be creating a science project in May based on their learning and this trip will be able to extend their learning for great independent projects. This field trip will get them excited about science and provide them with an experience that will follow them throughout their educational career.
