My Students

My classroom is a special needs preschool classroom within a small school in a rural, farming community. The classroom is a loving and ever-changing environment. We are an energetic, and eager bunch of 4-5-year-olds who are ready to learn, but many of us have specific needs such as autism, speech and developmental delays. We spend our days learning what we need to be ready for kindergarten and how to live functional lives.

We are so eager to learn how to be independent through life skills we learn at school.

We need toys and materials that look real and have a purpose. When our learning means something, we grow and develop skills that will last us a lifetime.

My Project

We love to play in our kitchen area however our current food doesn't "DO" anything. Plastic grapes all stuck together, eggs that don't crack, and other food that doesn't look like what we eat. The materials that we are asking for are foods we like and eat. A pizza we can put toppings on and cut apart and a cake with sprinkles and candles are real foods we enjoy and serve in our homes.

With the food we are asking for we can learn self sufficient life skills such as cutting and serving foods in a proper manner.

The salad kit helps us understand how to make healthy choices and the cookie kit helps us to learn patterns and skills in making items. The children will be able to take orders and make sandwiches specific to each order allowing them to increase their ability to follow directions. The kits that involve cutting allow the students to safely practice their fine motor skills and independence using utensils.

By getting the proper materials for our kitchen it will make it fun and engaging. The kitchen area will be able to teach and explore many skills we have never been able to do before. Our learning and imaginations will be able to grow and develop with these wonderful kitchen materials.
