Real-Life Writing Needs Real-Life Publishing!

My Project

I teach in Jersey City, New Jersey. We have a wonderful, diverse population of students. Our minority student enrollment is sixty percent. Seventy-four percent of students are economically disadvantaged, and we work hard here to close the economic gap. I hope to provide the opportunity for my students to publish their writing and other projects in real-life, that is, in color, with an Epson EcoTank ET-2800 Supertank Printer.

Without a color printer, my students cannot publish projects that reflect the effort and creativity they put into their final pieces.

We write in real-life here: their arguments represent opinions that are important to them, their stories are inspirational and have purpose, and their projects demonstrate research, data, and a variety of text features. Their publishing capabilities should do their ideas and creativity justice! Our black-and-white printer does not accomplish this goal. When they print, their graphics, subheadings, charts, tables, and other features get lost in the murk of monochrome.

Additionally, our old printer is not wireless. The students' personal devices do not have the USB port required to connect to it. In order to print, they must log in to an old desktop computer across the room. I have to display a sign-up sheet to act as a queue to keep track of whose turn it is to print. The process is arduous, especially on days when a multitude of students finish at once.

Furthermore, the printer ink bottles in this project will sustain our classroom printing projects over time. The EcoTank printer is efficient, and the ink will last longer than the ink of other printers.
