Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title One school where all the students receive free breakfast and lunch. We house many community services within our school to assist students and their families with many of the struggles they may face. The staff is incredibly talented and dedicated to helping these kids achieve and prepare them for high school and a brighter future than they may have even seen for themselves.
The majority of my students would probably describe themselves as not being good at math, but I know that is not true.
I want to engage them in all the interesting ways math is involved in so much of the world around them. If we can get a kid interested in what can be done with math, then we give them a reason to learn math. While calculators may sound at odds with that goal, more advanced calculators (than our current dollar store style) allow students to speed up some of the tedious processing and focus more on the big ideas. Larger display screens also allow students to be more discerning about their work rather than believing that any answer is correct if they got it on a calculator!
My Project
We don't spend years teaching children how to hold a paint brush before we let them paint a picture, so why do we so often keep kids who struggle in math from experiencing engaging real-life applications of math until after they have caught up to grade level skills?
Your donation of ten TI-84 calculators will allow these struggling 8th graders to be more engaged in what they can do with math in so many different areas and hopefully begin to change their attitudes towards math and their own capabilities.
Additionally, being able to quickly and easily do multi-step operations students will be able to focus on the bigger ideas rather than the calculations. There is also a very practical aspect to these calculators and that is the larger display area. This allows students to see what they've input and find their own mistakes rather than simply believing that if they did it on a calculator it must be right.
