Engaging students in interesting books and promoting language development and discussion is difficult when students are familiar with all the interactive read aloud books.
My students are an eager bunch of children wanting to engage in discussions about books, but they struggle due to their individual reading levels, learning needs, and repeated grades in the same classroom.
We are a group of students with language goals in a communication handicapped class. Our school is a low income, title one school, that struggles to find the funds to meet our classroom grade level needs.
We are a group of students ranging from second through fifth grade. Since we continue in the same classroom for up to four years, we struggle with finding new books and curriculum to promote academic growth. It's hard to work on prediction skills, when we are familiar with the story from the previous year.
My Project
We are requesting books to use during interactive read aloud time. During this time teachers share their favorite children's classics with young readers. Interactive Read-Alouds use popular children's literature to teach specific standards and build fluency and comprehension. Combining guided conversations with reflective thinking, read-aloud lessons engage children in strategic listening, speaking, reading and writing about text.
My students need new books for interactive read alouds. Covering four grade levels has its own set of challenges, but when curriculum is limited and lessons have to be repeated students are no longer engaging in new reflective thinking and developing new comprehension skills.
Using interactive read alouds in the classroom has had an amazing impact on student comprehension and language growth.
The problem now is that students are being presented repeated material because we do not have the book variety to support students across the four grade levels in my class. This project will provide a large amount of new and exciting books to my class.
