My students are in an elementary Communication Handicapped Special Day Class in a low income school in California. These students attend my class with language goals in expressive and receptive communication/language. They struggle with comprehending read material and spoken language, making inferences, identifying with characters and their point of view, sequencing stories and summarizing skills. They are learning to read and are acquiring English as their first language through text, but I have a limited library of books for them to explore. Many of the books I currently have are the "discarded" books from a public library, donated years ago by a class parent. These books are falling apart and outdated and do not encourage students to want to read. Our school no longer has a librarian on campus to introduce stories and authors and to help students through their own book selection.
