My Project

Middle school students often get the short end of the stick: too old to be treated like their elementary counterparts, but too young to be drilled like high schoolers. As a 7th grade teacher, I have seen 12 and 13 year olds get antsy during our 90 minute block schedule classes. They need chances to move, get up, take a walk, and stretch! Just because you are in middle school doesn't mean you need to sit in a desk all day. My students are still learning, growing, and changing. For so much change to happen in year, they at least deserve to feel comfortable and welcomed into the classroom they spend so much of their year in.

Being an ELA teacher, I rely on student communication and accountable talk to keep the classroom flowing; students should be gathering around the table to have these discussions instead of being limited by clunky desks.

My current classroom's traditional desks makes it difficult to meaningfully arrange seating in a way that promotes conversation. Having tables and easily moveable chairs would allow students and discussions to flow freely.
